Thoughts on Prometheus (Spoilers below for Prometheus and At the Mountains of Madness)
The first thing that I will say about Prometheus is that it is one of the best looking films in recent memory, and one of the best uses of 3D that I have seen as well. The set design is amazing, and it has a cast that many other sci-fi films could only dream of. There is much debate about what happened in the film, and and what the ultimate point of the film was. I will provide what I think is an apt comparison.
Director Guillermo Del Toro has recently said that Prometheus covered enough of the same ground as At the Mountains of Madness that a film adaptation of the story wouldn’t be necessary. If you aren’t familiar with that story, it involves scientists on an Antarctic mission finding remnants of an ancient civilization that could lead to the end of humanity. Substitute alien planet for the Antarctic and the similarities become even more apparent.
In Mountains, the real danger wasn’t the ancient beings that were the “creators” but their creations. In Prometheus the “engineers” were apparently dangerous and capable, but the black liquid that they had weaponized was the real danger to humanity. And in both stories, the curiosity of man led to awakening of the ancient beings.
In both stories there were ancient beings with knowledge and motivations that are outside the comprehension of man and they make no attempt to communicate with the humans who find them. There are some differences at the ends of the stories as one ends with a character instructing others to not return to the area and to stop investigating, and the other ends with a character going in search of answers despite everything that happened.
In my opinion the overarching theme of both stories is that humans shouldn’t go looking for something that we can’t comprehend. If we go looking for things that we can’t hope to understand, like who our creators are what their motivation was, we likely will not be happy with the result if we leave to see it.
Look Dave, I can see you’re really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
